File formats
Innobrix now allows importing more than just the IBX file. This currently works in two places:
- In
Modellibraries. - In
Terrainlibraries.
Currently GLB, OBJ (+.mtl and textures), and FBX are additionally supported.
| Category | Program | GLB Export | OBJ Export | FBX Export | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3D Modeling Software | Blender | Yes | Yes (incl. .mtl and textures) | Yes | Open-source, broad format support. |
| Autodesk 3ds Max | Yes (via plugins) | Yes | Yes | Also supports animations and textures. | |
| Autodesk Maya | Yes (via plugins) | Yes | Yes | Supports complex animations and rigs. | |
| SketchUp (Pro) | Yes (via plugins) | Yes | Yes | Export options depend on used plugins. | |
| Rhino 3D | Yes (with plugins) | Yes | Yes | Many export options, including CAD-related formats. | |

Importing OBJ + .MTL
Depending on the package used to export OBJ + .MTL (and textures), the importer asks for properties like scale (units) and the axis orientation used for export.
During import set the correct orientation and scale so the model loads correctly in Innobrix.

The small preview modal helps and shows how the model will be imported.
The preview modal is disabled for OBJ files larger than 100 MB excluding textures because of heavy browser memory usage.
Scale / Unit
Depending on the application the .OBJ comes from, you may need to adjust scale during import. Generally this is only needed when custom export settings were used. Innobrix itself works in meters.
FBX
The Autodesk FBX format is supported. FBX versions older than 7000 are not supported. If your file is too old, convert it to a newer version using the Autodesk FBX Converter.
| FileVersion | Corresponding FBX SDK Version | FBX Year Version |
|---|---|---|
| 7000 | FBX 2010 | FBX 2010 |
| 7100 | FBX 2011 | FBX 2011 |
| 7200 | FBX 2012 | FBX 2012 |
| 7300 | FBX 2013 | FBX 2013 |
| 7400 | FBX 2014 | FBX 2014 |
| 7500 | FBX 2016 | FBX 2016 |
| 7600 | FBX 2018 | FBX 2018 |
| 7700 | FBX 2019 | FBX 2019 |
| 7800 | FBX 2020 | FBX 2020 |
Textures & Scale
For an FBX, textures can be sent separately or embedded. Many packages offer an "Embed Media" option to include textures in the FBX export.
Because FBX is unitless, the preview modal may not always display it correctly. You may need to experiment with scale and/or orientation in the import settings to get the correct model.
GLB
GLTF (GL Transmission Format) and GLB are used to store and exchange 3D models and scenes. Developed by the Khronos Group, they provide an efficient, universal standard for 3D content on the web and elsewhere. Innobrix currently supports uploading GLB files directly.
A GLB is the binary variant of GLTF, combining all data (mesh, textures, animations, etc.) into one compact file. This is efficient for loading, especially when a single file is easier, like in VR/AR apps and on sites like Innobrix.
If your modeling tool can export GLB, it is generally the better choice compared to OBJ or FBX when available.
